Quarantine Recipes: Chicken Nuggets

Emily Derrenbacker, Writer - The Reporter

Chicken nuggets are an iconic American meal with only a few basic ingredients. This is the perfect recipe to try for when you have plenty of time at home.

Ingredients for 3-4 people:

2 chicken breasts

Approximately 1 cup of flour

Approximately 1 cup of bread crumbs

Approximately 1 egg

Vegetable or canola oil (see recipe for more instruction)

Buffalo sauce (optional)

  1. Make sure the chicken is defrosted.
  2. Cut the chicken into cubes about one inch across, or however large you would like them to be.
  3. Set up three bowls: pour the flour in one, the bread crumbs in another, and whisk the egg in the third.
  4. Take a piece of chicken and put it in the flour bowl, flipping it over until it is fully coated.
  5. Move the chicken to the egg bowl and submerge it completely, making sure the entire nugget is covered in egg.
  6. Place the chicken in the bowl with bread crumbs and roll it around until it is fully covered in bread crumbs.
  7. Set the chicken nugget on a plate off to the side. Repeat this process with every piece of chicken.
  8. If you have a fryer, fill it with oil and heat to approximately 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Fry the chicken nuggets in batches until golden brown (two to four minutes) and remove. The larger the piece of chicken is, the longer it will take to cook.
  9. If you don’t have a fryer, you can use a pot on the stove. Fill the pot with enough oil to submerge a few nuggets and heat over medium-high heat. Test the heat by dropping in a pinch of flour, if it sizzles immediately, it is hot enough to add the chicken. Add a few pieces of chicken at a time and cook until golden brown (one to two minutes). Test one piece of chicken by cutting it in half to see if it is cooked all the way through. Be careful transferring the chicken into and out of the pot, the oil can splatter and burn you. Transfer to a baking sheet when done and serve while warm.
  10. If you want more flavor, these chicken nuggets are great when tossed in buffalo sauce.
