Trump’s Greatest Problem is His Mouth

Throughout US history, our presidents have presented themselves as moderately professional and carried themselves with relative poise. However, our current president, Donald Trump, lacks this sense of professionalism. He appears incapable of holding his tongue and unable to remain civil with people who disagree with him. He even appears at times not understand how the law itself works. He doesn’t take advantage of the resources provided to him, and he has yet to figure out that the president doesn’t have all the power. Having someone like this as our president is absolutely unacceptable and potentially dangerous.

The greatest obstacle Trump faces is himself. There have been presidents that have done worse things than Trump has, like President Andrew Jackson whose Indian Removal Act lead to the Trail of Tears, but at the very least, they spoke to the public with an air of professionalism. Trump says things that he knows will rile up the public, and he does so without hesitation or consideration.

Trump’s favorite way to communicate the random thoughts that occur to him throughout the day is through his Twitter account. Most politicians run things by their publicists before they release anything to the public, but for some reason, Donald Trump thinks this is not necessary for him.

Before his presidency he demonstrated this. In 2013, he posted, “26,000 unreported sexual assaults in the military-only 238 convictions. What did these geniuses expect when they put men & women together?”. Any half decent publicist would have told Trump that this was a completely inappropriate social media post. Some may argue that the public deserves to know that this is how he feels, but this is an insensitive post that helps no one. If anything, it hurts people who may have been victims of this sexual assault by implying that they should have known better.

President Trump constantly shows us his ignorance through the racist and sexist comments he makes on a regular basis. Trump loves to talk about how Mexicans who enter the United States are criminals and rapists. During a campaign speech in 2015, he said, “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems to us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”

Today, most people know that it is inappropriate to generalize a group of people, but for some reason, Trump lacks this sentiment. He has no problem making this racists comments. No wonder the KKK endorsed him in an issue of their newspaper, the Crusader. He denounces minorities the same way they do. Trump also has a history of making rude and inappropriate comments about women. When Trump has a problem with a woman, he begins to demean their bodies and attacks their credibility. From referring to women as “Miss Piggy” to calling them disgusting and fat, Trump repeatedly shows his true feelings about women. We’re talking about a man that said, “If Ivanka weren’t my daughter, perhaps, I would be dating her.”

As the president, Donald Trump is expected to be the spokesperson for the United States. The man who is supposed to be the voice of the U.S. has no problem baiting our enemies on social media. Trump either doesn’t understand that his actions have consequences, or he simply doesn’t care about how his actions will affect the people he represents. When Trump tweeted, “Just heard Foreign Minister of North Korea speak at U.N. If he echoes thoughts of Little Rocket Man, they won’t be around much longer!”, he probably thought he was showing North Korea how tough the U.S. is. According to CBS, Kim Jong Un is taking this tweet as a threat against his country. Trump has the power to start wars with his words, but he doesn’t take his responsibility as serious as he should. For the sake of our country, he needs to learn how to control himself and his mouth.

How can we expect our president to handle our affairs overseas when he can’t appropriately address affairs that happen on U.S. soil? Remember how he responded to the events that recently happened on the University of Virginia’s campus. When white supremacists took to the streets to protest the removal of a Confederate statue and voice their hate speech in a violent manner, all Trump had to say was, “We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence, on many sides. On many sides. It’s been going on for a long time in our country.” At no point does Trump acknowledge the fact that these protests were held by violent white supremacists and the KKK who are major supporters of him. Instead, he took the time to call out both sides, the far left and the far right, for an event that the left wasn’t even involved in. It makes you think why is a man who is so outspoken when he disagrees with something so timid when speaking about this situation?

If our current president could show the public that he was here to help all of us, he would have a much higher approval rating. He needs to think about how his actions affect everyone else. Our nation is divided, and Donald Trump is doing nothing to ease any of the tension. He’s actually causing a lot of that tension. Our president needs to learn how to set a good example for the public. He should not condone the use of violence or hate speech or sexist and racists comments. He is not fit to be the president of the United States.
