In their only exhibition match before regular season, Stetson’s lacrosse team hosted Scotland’s national team on Sunday, February 12th. Scotland is traveling around the U.S. this month competing against different universities, and Stetson was honored to host them at the Athletic Training Center (ATC) during their tour around the States.

The match was anything but a boring one. Being down 5-0 with 21 minutes left in the first half, Stetson gave Scotland a run for their money, scoring three goals in less than two minutes. Down by only two, Stetson managed to tie the game at 5-5 with 13 minutes left. The final minutes of the first half was neck-and-neck the entire time, finally ending with Stetson in the lead by one point at 9-8.

The second half was just as exciting as the first half with the Hats and the Scotts battling back and forth every minute. The Hats were getting excited with less than four minutes left in the second half, up by 2 points with a score of 17-15. Unfortunately, Scotland fought hard to come back, scoring two goals, sending the game into overtime. The last shot to tie the game up was made by Scotland’s Jenni Aiton with only 18 seconds left in the game. Overtime started with Scotland winning the draw, scoring the winning goal with 1:23 left to go. The final score was 18-17.

The leader of Sunday’s game was senior team captain, Lindsay Summers. Summers ended the game with five goals, the most goals from a single player out of both teams. She commented on her contribution Sunday afternoon. “I’m just glad I could help keep the game close. All of my goals were assisted, so it was a team effort. I wouldn’t have scored without my teammates which shows how well our attack is working together,” commented Summers. When asked about the coach’s reaction to how the game ended, Summers was confident that her coach was not upset losing to Team Scotland. “The great thing about our coaches is that they focus on how we play, not the outcome. Obviously a loss is always tough, but our coaches always reflect on the effort we put forth. They made us realize that if we put in the work at practice and give a full 60 minutes of effort in a game, we will get the results we want,” stated Summers.

The Hats began regular season yesterday evening at the ATC against Fresno State where the competitiveness from the Scotland game did not seem to reach the same level. The team unfortunately lost 18-9. Stetson returns to the ATC this Sunday, February 19th, at 12:00 P.M. against Colorado.
