Quarantine Recipes: Mozzarella Sticks
May 24, 2020
Mozzarella sticks were one of my favorite meals to have in the CUB at Stetson. I’ve tried the pre-made frozen ones you can buy at Publix, but they’re so much better when they’re freshly made. It turns out, mozzarella sticks are really easy to fry up yourself, so here is a recipe that will make you feel like you’re enjoying a meal in the CUB with your friends.
Ingredients for mozzarella sticks:
3/4 cup flour
1 cup breadcrumbs
2 eggs
1 tablespoon milk
1 bag mozzarella string cheese
2 cups vegetable oil
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup marinara sauce for dipping (I used Newman’s Own)
- Take out three separate bowls. Pour the flour into one bowl, whisk the eggs and milk together in another, and combine the bread crumbs, garlic powder, and salt in a third bowl.
- Working with one piece of mozzarella at a time, coat each piece of cheese with flour and shake off the excess. Dip in egg mixture and then roll in the bread crumbs until fully coated. Repeat the process by coating the cheese in a second layer of egg and bread crumbs. The double coating will prevent the cheese from spilling out during the frying process.
- Transfer the cheese sticks to a rack and freeze for one hour.
- Fill a large pot with oil up to two inches and heat over medium-high heat until the oil reaches 350 degrees Fahrenheit. In batches of three to four (depending on the size of your pot), fry the mozzarella sticks until golden brown, turning occasionally so that each side cooks evenly. This should take about three minutes.
- Transfer the mozzarella sticks to a paper towel-lined plate and season with salt while still hot.
- Serve with marinara sauce.
Enjoy!
