Review for the Movie IT

Elizabeth Triece, Contributing Writer

“Now your nightmare comes to life.” The song, “Nightmare” by Avenged Centerfold perfectly describes the latest adaptation of Stephen King`s IT. This film is easily one of the best films of 2017. It is haunting (literally).

From the very beginning, IT sucks you in. All of the characters are engrossing, with, little-known star, Sophia Lillis at the helm of the self-proclaimed Loser`s Club. Actor Finn Wolfhard plays, the hilarious and foul-mouthed, Richie Tozier. You may recognize him from the highly popular Netflix show “Stranger Things.” Their performances are fresh, original, and exciting. While Sophia and Finn`s performances are totally gripping to watch, the most frightening part of the film is definitely Bill Skarsgard`s Portrayal of IT, the supernatural being who emerges from the shadows every 27 years to terrorize the residents of Derry, Maine. This creature masquerades under the guise of an innocent, friendly clown, known to the children as Pennywise the Dancing Clown, but in actuality is a flesh-eating, maniacal demon.

The beginning of the film will pull you in with innocent Georgie being taunted with the circus and all its delights, by Pennywise, before being gruesomely and mercilessly eaten in the street. This event sets the rest of the film into motion as the Loser’s Club journeys to defeat the demon that is the cause of so many murders and disappearances, within Derry. There are a few jump scares, but not many. The film is rich and high quality, and well worth the admission price. It really plays off of a different type of fear well. The fear is an insidious one that gets into the soul of the watcher and slowly overtakes it.  Do yourself a favor and go see it, if you dare.
