Leading Hatters: Building Stetson Leaders

Makenzie Fourman, a junior Molecular Biology major and a Public Health minor, currently works as a LEAD Team coordinator in addition to a variety of other leadership positions at Stetson.

She knew that she wanted to join leadership groups and roles before arriving at Stetson.

Fourman started her leadership career at Stetson through a variety of different organizations including Lead Team, FOCUS, working as the head softball manager, secretary for Beta Beta Beta, and morale captain for Hatterthon.

Within LEAD Team there are three levels of leadership: assistant, facilitator, and coordinator.

Prior to Fourman’s coordinator position, she started her leadership experience as an assistant facilitator. She wanted to further grow by taking on the position as a facilitator and implement the skills she learned as an assistant facilitator.

“I felt as though I needed to grow before I could help others grow, so I wanted to go through the steps,” added Fourman.

Once Fourman joined Alpha Chi Omega, she wanted to continue her leadership involvement by becoming their resource chair.

Despite her heavy involvement as a leader, she does not have a preferred position

“I don’t have a favorite, they have all taught me something new and that has shaped me as a person,” said Fourman.

Her leadership experiences gave her the opportunity to learn many valuable skills and lessons such as time management, patience, and cooperation through team work.

Fourman wanted to become a student leader to help herself and others grow.

“I think just knowing you are shaping future leaders is the most gratifying. I don’t do this for a reward, I do it because I am passionate about everything I put my mind and soul to.”

Fourman believes that leadership helps others grow, just as she has grown through her own leadership.

“I feel as though leadership helps everyone find a piece of themselves, so I want to encourage everyone to take a position if they are able to,” Fourman shared.
